Cadbury Marvellous Creations Cola Pretzel Honeycomb

Cadburys Marvellous Creations Cola Pretzel chocolate bar

The ‘Marvellous Creations’ range from Cadbury is evidently designed with the oddball in mind. Which works for me, ’cause I’m one and not shy of admitting it. You’d think, then, that I’d be pleased with the ker-azy paving pattern that divides the bar into bitesized bits. Not so – you see, it’s perfectly possible to have a love for wild’n’wacky flavours whilst being simultaneously pretty darn OCD about chocolate symmetry.

But, being Cadbury Dairy Milk, the chocolate’s characteristic crumbly texture allows me to break the bar into neatish pieces that don’t cause too much perturbation. A relief, because now I can get onto the altogether more appealing business of tucking in. I’ve had my beady, greedy eye on the latest release in Cadbury’s little line of Wonka-esque flavours for long enough that the anticipation is nigh-on unbearable.

I’m a sucker for sweet’n’savoury sensations, and am not averse to having a bash at creating my own bars filled with bashed up bits of strange snacks – like my pork scratchings chocolate which helped inspire this excellent meaty chocolate treat Food Urchin concocted for Godiva’s chocolate challenge. So this combo of sweet milk choc with tangy cola, crunchy honeycomb and salty-savoury pretzels held much promise.

With Cadbury Dairy Milk, you know what you’re getting – a big whack of creamy, intensely sweet chocolate with the characteristic taste that fills your senses as it melts in your mouth. It’s a great foil for big, bold flavours, so you’d think that it’d provide the ideal contrast for the inclusions. Sadly, not so here. The bar is quite a moreish munch, particularly when you hit a pretzel piece, but it neither makes my eyes close in ecstasy nor widen in shock and awe.

It’s not awesome, but it’s more than alright. The cola flavour isn’t as dominant as it needs to be – the jellylike chunks just slightly tangy in a non-specific manner. If you were thinking cola bottles dunked in choc, you’ll be disappointed. Come to think of it, some of that citric sugar off the fizzy variety could be a good way to jazz the bar up a bit. There’s a rare burst of honeycomb, but the sweetness is too similar to the chocolate itself to stand out.

Basically, it’s a tasty bar of Cadbury Dairy Milk with a nicely salty-sour savour from the pretzels. In theory, ‘cola pretzel honeycomb’ sounds sensational; in practice, it’s a bit of a let down. Bear in mind I was fair fizzing with anticipation at the prospect, and you’ll understand just how flat I felt when it didn’t deliver. Not so much ‘Marvellous Creation‘ as ‘Quite Nice Creation’; and, oh, it could have been so much more.

  1. Interesting review Zoe, have you tried the daim bar mini easter eggs? I was expecting a daim bar pieces and that was a let down too. Would love to know what your thoughts are 🙂

    • No but I know that Mondelez (the parent company) are pairing CDM with all the flavours they’ve done with Milka in Europe. I think the problem with Cadbury choc is that that Dairy Milk taste is so distinctive and dominant it overwhelms lots of additions!
